Grand Hotel Santa Lucia

I was extremely disappointed with the Grand Hotel Santa Lucia. There was construction outside of the hotel along the waterfront and I was not advised of that before I booked the room. The room itself, although nicely done, was next to a taxi stand, where there were at least a dozen taxis waiting for hotel guests (there are many hotels along the waterfront) to leave. It was so noisy we could not sleep. The drivers hung out there, spoke loudly and were constantly honking horns. The hotel room was too warm, we could not control the temperature and it was too noisy to open the windows. The breakfast was poor/mediocre - not much selection and unappealing, similar to a breakfast at a chain hotel in the states. The staff were somewhat aloof. The hotel room was too expensive considering those factors and I would not return. It was recommended to me by a friend and I cancelled the room in the hotel that I originally booked, which was a third of the cost. I was in tears over the waste of money - I could have bought an authentic Murano vase when we were in Venice for the extra expense of this hotel.

We returned after a few years in this hotel that we believe to be the best in Naples; a structure of great charm and elegance in an enviable position; the double room of limited size, but well furnished, well cared for and functional, with a balcony overlooking Castel dell'Ovo always suggestive despite the work in progress; spectacular breakfast with traditional Neapolitan products; professional and friendly staff; price absolutely in line with the truly high-level offer
